Streaming: America’s Favorite Pastime

Streaming: America’s Favorite Pastime

Ever wonder if other people stream as many shows and movies as you? Are they using Netflix or Hulu? Watching comedies or dramas? And, what’s an “acceptable” amount of episodes to watch in one sitting? We set out to answer some of the most pressing questions about one of the nation’s favorite pastimes: streaming.

After surveying 1,000 individuals across the U.S., this is what we found.

1. No need to pick

Did you know the majority of people across the U.S. use both paid TV and streaming services? It seems we don’t favor one over the other but would rather have both. What may not be as surprising is more 18-34 year olds are reaching for their computers to stream content, while individuals 35 and up are sticking with the good ole TV.

Image 1

Image-2

2. We want it now

Most people use a streaming service because it gives them the freedom to watch what they want, when they want. Having the option to pick what and when to watch is even more important to people than the price they pay, including those in the lowest income bracket.

3. Netflix is King

Across all ages, genders, locations, and incomes, it’s all about Netflix. That’s because 73% of streamers choose Netflix. As for the other big streaming services, 30% of people use Amazon Prime followed by Hulu at 22%.

Image-3

Image-4

4. Less is more

Most people reported they spend 0-3 hours a week streaming shows and movies. But, are people actually being honest with themselves (really, only 0-3 hours)? The amount of income also correlated with time spent streaming—individuals making $75,000+ like their TV time slightly more.

5. We just want to laugh

From north, south, east, and west, the nation’s favorite genre is comedy, with drama not far behind. Otherwise, men like sci-fi more while the women enjoy crime shows. What about animation? You’ll catch more 18-24 year olds watching that.

Image-5.2
Image-5.1
Image-5.3

6. Just one more episode

With so many shows at our fingertips, it can be hard to say no. Enter binge-watching. Of those surveyed, 9% have streamed 12 or more episodes in one sitting. Who are these people? Mostly the younger crowd and those from the South. But, don’t worry, most people stick to 1-3 episodes in one sitting.

Image-6

Image-7

7. A family affair?

Eh, not so much. Most people prefer to stream alone, especially 18-24 year olds. Out of those who did stream with family, it was mostly the 35-44 year old group. Probably because this group is more likely to be married and have kids.

8. Sharing is caring

The older you get, the more likely you are to pay for your own streaming account. That seems logical, but did you know 61% of people have their own account and only 11% use someone else’s? In the West, you can find more people sharing an account and splitting the fees.

Image-8

Image-9

9. Dinner and a movie

Multitasking while streaming shows and movies has become a way of life. A majority of people answered they prepare meals or eat while streaming. If they’re not doing that, they’re most likely surfing the web. And only 22% of respondents don’t multitask while streaming.

Filming Locations of Premium Channel Shows

Ever wonder where all those scenes in your favorite shows were shot? Some episodes like the first season of True Detective were filmed right where they took place. Others such as Veep transformed places like Baltimore to look like Washington D.C. You may be surprised to find out where some series were shot.

Here’s a look into the filming locations for nine current HBO®, CINEMAX®, and SHOWTIME® hits. See if your hometown made the list.

U-verse Installation – What to Expect

Video transcript:

If you’ve signed up for U-verse or are thinking about it, we’d like to help you understand what to expect from your U-verse installation, and how to get ready for it. If you’ve signed up recently, please wait until after U-verse is installed to cancel your current service. That way we can make sure your transition is as seamless as possible.

If you rent or lease your residence, you should get the owner’s consent before U-verse is installed. If you ordered U-verse Voice, be sure to contact your home alarm provider on or before the installation date, to let them know about the installation.

At any time you can check your appointment status on our “where’s my tech” webpage, at www.att.com/uverseorderstatus.

For safety reasons our technicians are not allowed to move furniture or your personal belongings. So before the technician arrives, please clear the areas around connections, like outlets, and jacks, so that the technician can reach them. The technician may also need access to crawl spaces and attics. Also, please place your pets in an area away from where the technician is likely to be working.

We recommend that you check your computer before installation, to make sure it meets the minimum standards for handling your new Internet speed. Our PC maintenance tool is designed to run tests on your hardware and fix potential issues. Just go to pctoolbox.att.com, and download the software. Please note, the software is currently only available for PC.

On the installation day, an authorized adult who is at least 18 years old needs to be present, and available, to the technician during the installation. Your technician will give you a call, and let you know the estimated time of arrival. The installation takes about four hours to complete. The time varies, depending on ease of access, and so on.

When the technician arrives, he or she will review the order with you to confirm which products you want. The technician will then walk through your home with you to determine where the U-verse equipment will be installed. The technician will talk with you about wiring options and determine whether new wiring or jacks are needed. Your technician will also perform testing to ensure you will have the best performance.

When the work is done, the technician will spend time talking with you about our services, and answer your questions.

Top Benefits of Internet for Seniors

The Internet is able to keep senior citizens engaged in a variety of ways that were not available to them a few decades ago. Here are a few examples of how the Internet can be a great resource for seniors.

Seniors and Social Media

Social media sites began as hubs for young people but an increased number of seniors are engaging on these sites. They have found this is one of the easiest ways to stay in touch with friends, family and current events in the modern, digital age.

Seniors and Online Pen Pals

Long before the Internet even existed, people kept in touch by mailing physical letters back and forth. Today, the pen pal landscape has changed as more senior-based pen pal connection sites have been started online. Whether an older person is looking for a friend to converse with or a romantic interest, the Internet is home to many senior pen pals waiting to connect. This new form of finding pen pals is a great way for seniors to stay connected with people.

Seniors Go Back to School…Online

It might surprise some to learn that people age 50-64 are a demographic that is returning to school in large numbers. When students were surveyed across various age groups, it was observed that older students showed more satisfaction with online learning than younger students and the rate of satisfaction increased with age.

Seniors Shop Online

An activity that may sometimes be frustrating for seniors is going shopping. They may have trouble driving or parking in crowded lots. Some may not be able to walk around for long periods of time or navigate a huge store or mall. And many can feel anxious around big crowds of people. Online shopping is the perfect solution! They are still able to buy gifts for family, or treats for themselves without all the hassle of going to the store.

In conclusion, there are many places for seniors to feel at home online, and the Internet can enrich their lives in many ways. It’s no longer a place dominated by youth. There are online communities full of seniors, learning new things and meeting new people. This trend will only continue as technology makes the Internet accessible for generations of seniors to come.
