Bitcoin’s Creator Revealed?

Bitcoin’s Creator Revealed?

May 6, 2016

Numerous sources recently revealed the alleged identity of Bitcoin’s creator as Craig Wright, an Australian businessman. Until now, the world has only known the Founder by his pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto. Wright has since been providing proof that he is indeed the mystery man behind the digital currency to disprove mounting skepticism.

“I was the main part of it, other people helped me,” Wright said in a televised interview. If Craig Wright is truly the father of Bitcoin, this solves one of tech’s biggest mysteries.

What’s Bitcoin?

  • Who & When: Bitcoin was created by a person under the alias of Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009.
  • What: Bitcoin is a digital currency used to make transactions while eliminating the middle man, or what we know as banks. Its units can be thought of as virtual tokens where all transactions are made anonymously.
  • Why: Bitcoins are not tied to any country or subject to regulation, making international payments easier. There are no credit card fees, which make them appealing to small businesses. People also buy Bitcoins as an investment.
  • So what: In more recent years, companies like Microsoft, Overstock.com and Dell have indirectly begun accepting Bitcoin payments. The companies partner with a middleman, usually Coinbase or BitPay, who takes the Bitcoin, coverts it to cash and gives the company U.S. dollars.

The Proof

The early block of Bitcoins is now valued at $400 million. Wright claims he has the ability to control these Bitcoins, which have never been moved in the online ledger.

A spokesman for Wright said, “Dr Wright will be signing messages on his blog … they will be signed with the key associated with Block 9, the only key definitively known to be associated with the Satoshi pseudonym, that used to send Bitcoin to Hal Finney, one of its earliest pioneers and its first identified developer after Satoshi Nakamoto, in 2009.”

Two senior members, Jon Matonis and Gavin Andresen, of the Bitcoin community have already expressed their belief that Wright is Bitcoin’s creator.

The Retraction

Despite revealing his identity, Wright doesn’t want to be bothered with any publicity. “I want to work, I want to keep doing what I want to do. I don’t want money. I don’t want fame. I don’t want adoration. I just want to be left alone,” Wright said.

Surprising developments came on May 5, 2016, when Wright completely wiped his blog, leaving only one message headlined “I’m Sorry.”

Although Wright maintains that he is the real Satoshi Nakamoto, he writes, “I believed that I could do this. I believed that I could put the years of anonymity and hiding behind me. But, as the events of this week unfolded and I prepared to publish the proof of access to the earliest keys, I broke. I do not have the courage. I cannot.”

So the question still lingers. Who is the real Nakamoto? The world may never know.
